Jan Cleijne is the author of Legends Of The Tour.
Where are you now and what can you see?
It’s the morning after the Dutch national football team were defeated by Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals. I am standing in my living room looking outside at the empty streets around a little square of wingnut trees, not far from the centre of Amsterdam. Little orange flags are fluttering in the wind everywhere.
What are you currently reading?
A re-run of the Bone series by Jeff Smith. With my 2-year old daughter.
Choose a favourite author and say why you admire her-him?
Moebius is my favorite author. He created worlds with the strangest characters, mostly told with a certain tranquility or lightness. And because of his beautiful style of drawing of course.
Describe the room where you usually create comics
It’s the ground floor of a corner house, one floor below our living room. It’s spacey and it’s a real mess, devided into little islands: one for painting, one for drawing and one for computer work. At the back is a quiet and tiny little garden, surrounded by an enormous bunch of bamboo.
Which fictional character most resembles you?
Ernie from Sesame Street. Positive minded and slightly unpredictable.
Who is your hero-heroine from outside graphic novels and comics?
My wife is the biggest by far, but otherwise David Attenborough. His documentaries are enchanting.
Jan Cleijne’s graphic documentary, Legends Of The Tour is published by Head Of Zeus.
Legends Of The Tour is a graphic documentary that captures the essence of the Tour de France – the grit and the glory. Since Maurice Garin’s inugural victory in 1903, thousands of kilometers have been covered in pursuit of the yellow jersey and few of them have been without incident or drama. From Eugene Christophe welding his bicycle back together at the foot of the Pyrenees in 1913; to Lance Armstrong’s domination and disgrace.
Jan Cleijne is a Dutch Graphic Novelist and artist.
Jan lives with his wife and two little daughters (age 2 and 0) in a corner house in lively neighbourhood built in the Twenties and Thirties. The rooms have triangle, pentagon or heptagon shapes.
When he is not creating comics he is painting, doing illustration jobs and spending time with his family as much as possible. He loves cycling in and outside Amsterdam, creating strange soundscapes with guitar effect devices and plays the bass guitar in a soul-rock band.
Legends of the Tour is his first published graphic novel.
His next book will be a psychedelic coming-of-age thriller roadmovie about a 25-year-old student who is running away from the nighmares that haunt him.
