Top 10 Graphic Novels

On 19 May 2014

Congratulations to Bryan and Mary Talbot and Kate Charlesworth on Sally Heathcote: Suffragette. Number one on our top ten of the most popular graphic novels today on Amazon UK. This is a selective search of what the team at Escape Books considers to be real graphic novels.

  1. Sally Heathcote Suffragette | Mary and Bryan Talbot and Kate Charlesworth (Jonathan Cape)
  2. The Complete Maus | art spiegelman (Penguin)
  3. V For Vendetta | Alan Moore and David Lloyd (DC Comics)
  4. Persepolis | Marjane Satrapi (Jonathan Cape)
  5. Nemo: Roses of Berlin | Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill (Knockabout Comics)
  6. The Hobbit | JRR Tolkien, adapted by Charles Dixon, and David Wenzel (Harper Collins)
  7. The Truth is in a Dark Cave in the Black Mountain | Neil Gaiman and Eddie Campbell
  8. Hansel & Gretel | Neil Gaiman and Lorenzo Mattotti (Toon Books)
  9. From Hell |  Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell (Knockabout Comics)
  10. Twisted Dark, Volume One | Neil Gibson (T Publications)

The search is filtered by popularity by sales, for the words “Graphic Novels”. It is not taken from the Bestsellers listing for Comics & Graphic Novels.

Not only does a search for “graphic novels” generate a lisiting of every sort of big brand comic book pretending to be a graphic novel, but includes illustrated childrens’ books, and even porn, (presumably mistakenly labelled as the other sort of graphic novel), and box-set tie-in gimmicks of every kind.

The writer’s name is shown first and then the comics illustrator’s name is shown second. The publisher’s name is in bracketes. The search was done on 19 May 2014 at 15:00hrs.
